 Week 3                      September 6-10, 2010

  • A Successful Parade!

I hope that each of you had a pleasant and relaxing Labor Day weekend.  The children enjoyed last Friday’s Labor Day parade.  Thank you for your assistance in getting our costumes together!   We visited third, fourth and fifth grade classes plus the main office, and enjoyed a sweet treat.  It was an exciting morning!

    Important Dates

    Tuesday, September 14, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

First Grade Mother’s Tea in our classroom

     Friday, September 17, 9:30-11:00 a.m.

First Grade Trip Around the World

We could still use a tour guide or two, and a photographer!  (Please see below)

     Other Reminders

We will complete our Patriotism unit next week by considering America as one of many nations in the world.  Each student will make a “passport” to use on our Trip Around the World.  We will “visit” other countries to learn about different cultures and customs.  If you volunteered to help but the date will not work for you, please contact me as soon as possible.  Also, if you can serve as a tour guide or photographer, please let me know.  Thank you!

Thank you for sending water bottles each day!

    Academic Update

Language Arts:  We are blending consonants and vowels to build words, as well as learning several special sounds.  We will also begin our first story in our readers.

Math:  Math skills this week include acting out addition and subtraction stories, working with positional words and ordinal numbers, reviewing addition facts and counting pennies.

Social Studies:  Our unit on Patriotism continues with the concept of citizenship, as exemplified in Presidents Washington and Lincoln.

Bible:  This week’s focus is on God’s creation of the world.

    Spelling Words

We will begin our Spelling lessons soon.

    Homework

Homework assignments begin today!  You will notice attached to the math homework a list of the day’s assignments.  Reading and spelling homework will be added over the next few weeks.  Please sign to let me know you have checked your child’s work, and fill in the number of minutes it took your child to complete the assignment.  Thank you!
