AUGUST 30,  2010

TOPIC: LANGUAGE ARTS

Our story this week, Angel Child, Dragon Child, tells of the challenges a little Vietnamese girl faces when she moves to America. Her life is changed by the acts of friendship she receives from the people around her. Summarizing and visualizing are two important skills for good readers. Ask your third grader to summarize a TV show or movie you have watched together. Model summarizing for them by reporting how you spent that day. Putting important ideas into a few choice words is a terrific skill to have. This week, remember to spend some time helping your third grader review the vocabulary that will be on their reading test on Friday. The definitions came home with this newsletter.

We begin our writing lessons with a poem that compares the past with the present. Your third grader needs to bring in a picture of them at the time they were in kindergarten or first grade by Wednesday.

We will work with fractions, counting money, and learning to add in our heads. For a clear explanation of how to do mental math, come the Parent Coffee Monday night.

SCIENCE

We have had a lot of fun breaking open seeds and flowers to see how they are made. This week, we take a closer look at conifers.

Our parent coffee is Monday, August 30th, 6:30 p.m. here in our classroom. We will be covering field trips and other events for the year, classroom helpers, and curriculum issues. I look forward to seeing you.

Remember to bring water bottles especially on Mondays and Thursdays for P. E.
